Work #5 - Science - Tuesday and Wednesday - 09.08.2026 and 09.09.2026
Students defined the Key Terms on Tuesday regarding atoms, molecules, and some of the key compounds of life. On Friday students were asked to complete, for their notes, a science color-in sheet showing there relative abundance of some key elements in living things.
Today we both touched on where those elements came from and on the formula for DENSITY. (D=M/V). Density being Mass divided by Volume.
When we learn formula in this science class they are often “three formula in one.” As students are learning algebra concurrently we use the “formula triangles” to show that ..
1. D=M/V
2. M=(D)(V)
3. V= M/D
As long as we know two of the values, we can always calculate the third. This density formula will be useful tomorrow as we explore, with a mini-lab, the properties of water and an illustration of the ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCE.
We caught, about, twelve minutes of “How the Universe Made Your Car” which showed a bit about where the elements heavier than Hydrogen originated. From the BIG BANG …. About 14 billion years ago there were, at least, two generations of stars that helped create all of the other naturally occurring elements we now list on the PERIODIC TABLE.
The way STARS making heavy elements wrapped back to how we began class;
Current Events. Warm waters in the Pacific fueling a hurricane that came close to Hawaii and caused significant flooding. Warm water has more KINETIC ENERGY than cooler water. Hurricanes (Typhoons and Cyclones) gain strength from warm water.
Heat is really a measure of the AVERAGE KINETIC ENERGY of particles. Stars can force atoms like HYDROGEN to make larger elements (like Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen) because of their tremendous HEAT and GRAVITY which overcomes the PROTONS natural repulsion. The STRONG FORCE binds the PROTONS together in an ATOMIC NUCLEUS. That’s why it’s called the STRONG FORCE. Of the four fundamental forces (that we know of) it is, by far, the strongest as it resits the positively charged protons “trying” to fly apart.
