05.27.2020 - Science - Assignment and notes -

05.27.2020 - Wednesday - Science -
Remember, as always, to look up the CAPITALIZED terms with which you are unfamiliar.

  1. Current Events:  CNN 10 - https://www.cnn.com/cnn10
    1.   Space X Launch:  The United States has not launched an astronaut to orbit from with the Unite States since the end of the space shuttle program - Almost ten years ago.  Space X is a joint venture with Nasa meant to launch this afternoon from the same launch pad in Florida from which Apollo 11 launched.
    2. There is a view of a ring galaxy which shows the result of an ongoing interaction between two large galaxies. Galaxies - like our Milky Way - can be found in varies stages of collisions and mergers. Even though each galaxy contains hundreds of billions of stars galaxy collisions rarely result in any star collisions because the distance between the individual strs is so great.
II.  Science Assignment:  Due Friday:  Email with a list of your example of the eight Animal Kingdom Phyla discussed in class notes and the FOUR Plant Kingdom Phyla mentioned below.

III. The Plant kingdom has twelve currently-recognized Phyla.
A. Plants are among the most diverse Kingdoms, with over 300,000different species.
B.  Plants are EUKARYOTIC, and have CELL WALLS made of CELLULOSE.  Chances are, you’re reading this from within a building being held up by cellulose …. Wood!
C.  Plants have ORGANELLES called CHLOROPLASTS where PHOTOSYNTHESIS takes place.

IV.  The Plant Kingdom is, first, divided into VASCULAR and NONVASCULAR species.  You have a vascular system. We studied our vascular system in class and you probably remember that we have arteries, veins, and capillaries to carry blood from our lungs and hear to every cell in our bodies.  The evolution of a vascular system was a huge leap ahead in the evolution of plants.
A.  Think back to our study of PIONEER SPECIES:  We looked at LICHENS as one of the first species to colonize hard rock after lava cools or after it’s been scraped by a glacier.  One of the first plants to move into an area, where lichens have taken hold, are mosses.
B.  Mosses and liverworts are non-vascular, which means they do not transport foods and nutrients around to all of their cells.  That’s why you see mosses growing in damp places. They have to be in places where there is lots of water because they don’t have XYLEM and PHLOEM to bring water and nutrients to all fo their cells.  Their cells absorb water directly from the environment.
C.  Vascular plats have three, main, parts.
1.  The roots.  Roots help anchor a plant and also bring water and nutrients to the rest of the plant.
2.  The STEM:  The stem might be woody or non-woody. It transports nutrients and pulls water up from the soil.  The most important roll is as a scaffold for leaves.
3.  LEAVES: Are where all the action is in a plant. It’s where PHOTOSYNTHESIS takes place and it’s where TRANSPIRATION occurs.
4.  Vascular plants are divided into ANGIOSPERMS and GYMNOSPERMS.  We’ve visited both kinds of plants on campus and at outdoor education.  (Think back to our on-campus walk to the oak trees, or to the study of redwoods at outdoor ed.)

V.  ASSIGNMENT;  Find an example of each of the following common plant Phyla:
A.  MOSS:
B  FERN
C.  CONIFER
D:  FLOWERING PLANT

05.18.2020 - Tuesday -

  1.   Happy Tuesday … Attendance link is below. Please check out the science vids on YouTube. I’m working on the production quality and, strangely, no corporate sponsors have linked to my YouTube channel because of the exciting content … however, it does give an overview of the science notes :-) … Today we’ll add content and clarifications to the notes, but no new assignments as you have the math pdf and the science notes to work on.  See if you can get your hands on a store-bought mushroom for science class. (I discourage collecting a wild mushrooms for out mushroom dissection as, very rarely, wild mushrooms might not be safe to eat. Store bought mushrooms are totally safe. - And good in an omelette - )
  2. Note the new link for attendance:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_CM_acOMmAKH-QZ0eMLd3jNqdVFm0ieoD-UleQcj7KMjDIw/viewform

05.18.2020 - Science Notes - Monday -
Assignment:  Define the vocabulary terms.
  1. Current Events:  Check out CNN 10 at. https://www.cnn.com/cnn10
    1. The virus doesn’t move by itself:  Covid 19 is moved, mainly, by people which is why we’re sheltering in place.
    2. Memorial Day weekend will look a bit different this year as beaches reopen but people are still required to have masks and stay six feet apart.
II.  Fungi - recap - Fungi is one of the six kingdoms of life. While many people think fungi are like plants, because of they way we see them grow, fungi are actually much more related to animals because they are HETEROTROPHS.  They do not have chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesize to make their own food. Instead, fungi send out long, thin, stalks called hyphae that secrete ENZYMES to help digest and pull nutrients from organic material.
A.  Some fungi feed only on dead things.
B.  Other fungi are PARASITIC and feed off living things.
C.  Fungi is important for food production. Among many things fungi produces …
1.  Bread.
2.  Chocolate.
3.  Citric Acid.
4.  Fermented drinks and food.

D. Fungi is important in medicine, make antibiotics that fight bacterial infection.
E.  Some fungi can caused illness.

III.  Vocabulary:
A.  Gamete
B.  Fermentation
C. Diploid
D.  Haploid
E.  Germ-cell
F.  Fungi
G.  Autotrophs
H. Heterotrophs

IV.  When you see / eat a mushroom you’re only seeing the “fruiting body” of the fungi. The main part of the fungi is the mycelium, a network of hyphae (long, thin, tubes) that extend far beyond the fruiting body and search for nutrients. The fruiting body exists to make SPORES.

05.13.2020 - Daily Note -

05.13.2020 - Daily Note - Wednesday -

  1. Hi. There are some longer assignments today so please space out the work over two days for both math and science. The science notes are posted on the blog and in google classroom and do require internet (for looking up a species.) However, it can also be completed with an old-fashioned encyclopedia. (Something a bit more common in my generation :-)
    1. Science - Notes and assignment (posted.)
    2. Math - Unit 6, Lesson 18. Last lesson in unit 6. It’s a long lesson. My job today will be to complete clarifying notes and a video on the math.
