Friday - Environmental Studies - October 25th

1. Complete and share or email yesterday's Ocean Acidification Slide assignment.

2. Research: Look up, with a partner, the results of mixing chalk with a light acid like vinegar. Recall we studied chalk and it's origins in class - the calcium carbonate shells of once-living sea animals.

3. Complete the following questions and submit them on paper or through e-mail.

Hi Scientists;

Attached is a picture of our one board of notes that went along with our visit from our guest speakers today. The guest scientists guided students through a lesson on heat transfer and conduction of different materials.
Important test information: The test link below (and on the website and in the Google Classroom) is a MAKEUP test for students with a missing quiz or for students who requested a retest. If, however, you are up-to-date on all your quizzes, you MAY STILL take this online quiz for EXTRA CREDIT. It's based upon our notes for the past two weeks. Take your time, review your notes before taking the quiz, and take it once. Ten questions, multiple choice.
We have a regular assignment in class tomorrow. No end-of-week quiz. The assignment continues our study of Cell Theory.

What forms the basis for the food pyramid for the oceans?

2. What is the difference between a food pyramid and an energy pyramid?

3. Explain the difference between ACIDS and BASES. For your slide, show EXAMPLES of each.

4. WHY do some animals in the oceans make shells? (Show an animal with a shell.)

5. HOW do these animals make their shells? (Show examples of different sized shells.)

6. WHAT are shells made of? (Show the chemicals needed to make a shell.)

7. Describe OCEAN ACIDIFICATION. Be sure to note the normal pH (Acidity) of the ocean and how human activity has been changing the pH of the oceans.

8. What is ACID RAIN? Describe what it is and show a map of the places in the United States most affected by it.

9. How does ACID RAIN affect living things on land? Be sure to find a picture of an area before and after exposure to ACID RAIN.

10. Solutions: Show, and explain, how we can reduce the acidification of both our oceans and rain.

Thursday's note home (10.10.2024)

Hi Scientists;

Attached are board pics showing today's notes - which give examples from "The Martian" of Newton's Three Laws in action.
The other white board notes are the things to study for tomorrow's open-note science quiz.
All the things we've studied that meet in "The Martian," with the overall theme being how, and why, Earth is an oasis of life while Mars (while it may have, once, had life) is, essentially, a cold and lifeless planet.
'gives a great image of why we study biology and, moving forward with our study of life, why we need to take care of our unique biosphere.
